The examiner will ask you a "show me and tell me" question at the beginning of the test,
They will be one of the following combinations of if you answer or demonstrate incorrectly you will have a driving fault marked against you!

Q Tell me how would you check the headlight and tail lights are working?
A Explain that you would switch on the ignition if necessary, and operate the headlight's button and walk around the vehicle.

Q Show me how you would check the direction indictors are working?
A Switch on hazard warning lights, walk around your vehicle and check all indicators are working.

Q Tell me how would you check the brakes are working?
A Brakes should be tested as you move off they should not feel spongy or slack and vehicle must not pull to one side.

Q Show me how would you set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should included both front and back screens?
A Set all relevant controls including fan, temperature, air-direction and make use of heated.

Q Show me how would you switch on the fog light and explain when you would use it?
A Switch on the fog light. When the visibility reduce bellow 100 m.

Q Show me or identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and how would you check the windscreen washer level?
A Identify the reservoir. To check the windscreen washer level I need to turn the ignition on use wiper lever.

Q Show me how would you check the brake lights are working on this vehicle?
A Switch on the ignition and press the brake pedal and ask someone to check the lights at the rear of the car.

Q Tell me or Show me how would you check that the power assisted steering is working before starting your journey?
A When I switch on the engine slightly move the steering wheel to either side Left and Right or slightly move off using steering wheel either side, if the steering becoming heavy the system may not be working correctly.

Q Tell me where would you find the information for the recommended tyre pressure for this vehicle and how it should be checked?
A A manufacture's guide or information plate inside of the passenger's door, use a reliable gauge and do not forget the spear tyre, to get an accurate reading tyres must be checked when they are cold before journey and valve caps must be replaced.

Q Tell me how would you know if there is a problem with the anti lock braking system?
A Warning light should illuminate if there is any problem with the system.

Q Show me how you would check the parking brake or Handbrake for excessive wear?
A Apply footbrake firmly demonstrate by applying handbrake so when it is fully applied it secures the vehicle.

Open the bonnet,

Q Identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and how you would check the correct level of hydraulic (brake fluid) ?
A Identify the reservoir and it should be between Minimum and Maximum markings.

Q Identify where you would check the engine oil level and how you would check it has sufficient level of oil?
A Take out the dipstick it should be between the Minimum and Maximum levels.

Q Identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how would you check that the engine has the correct level of the water?
A Identify the Minimum and Maximum on heater tank, explain it when the engine is cold I can top up it to correct level.

Q Tell me how would you make sure the head restraint is correctly adjusted so it could provide the best protection in the event of an accident?
A The head restraint must be adjusted with the crown of our head.

Q Show me how would you switch your headlights from depth to main beam and explain how would you know the main beam is on whilst you are inside the vehicle?
A Turn the engine on and operate the switch lights to main beam the warning light should be on at your dashboard.

Q Tell me how would you check the tyres to insure that they have sufficient tread depth and that the general condition is safe to use to drive?
A 1.6 mm of tread depth across the central ¾ of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire circumference. No cuts or bulges.

Q Show me how would you check that the horn is working?
A Press the horn button where it is located if it is making sound it works.
